CHEAP homes dubbed "Fonzie" flats being built in Brisbane's north could be going for as little as $200,000. Up to 40 of the Fonzie flats small apartments built above a garage like the home of Happy Days character The Fonz are part of the State Government's affordable housing strategy.

Development of the flats, in Fitzgibbon, Carseldine, Bald Hills, Taigum and Deagon, is due to begin in March and Deputy Premier Paul Lucas said they could be ready to move into by Christmas.

"Nowhere else in Brisbane can you find apartments in a new development only 12km from the city for just $200,000," Mr Lucas said.

"There are plans for up to 40 of these Fonzie flats innovatively designed one and two-bedroom apartments built over a garage as part of the first stage of a new residential subdivision within the Fitzgibbon Urban Development Area.

"This is great value for working families, singles, seniors and young couples who want a quality home close to transport and community facilities."

Mr Lucas said 500 jobs would be created through the project. Public submissions on the proposed development scheme which also includes more traditional houses and units are being sought. It can be viewed online at www.ulda.qld.gov.au.
